Senior Golfer Handicap Rating by USGA
|
|
I have taken a lot of my personal time to find an answer to a situation without first having a question. My observation is of the handicap system and indexing. The USGA does not have a course rating for Seniors. They have tees used for indexing, but no ratings for Seniors as they do Men’s and Ladies. So as a result if you play a certain tee then your handicap can be adjusted by strokes if all players are using the same tee.
Am I the only one that sees the problem? This would say “if” a lady was moved back to the men’s tee she would be given a few strokes, but this is not the case because the handicap system is rated for ladies, but not Seniors. It is a system rated by gender only, age is not a factor.
There are golf courses that recognize Seniors, and during tournaments offer the forward tees. To those I applaud them for taking the initiative to make Seniors feel part of the game.
I am a member of a club that does not recognize Seniors playing the “forward tees” in the clubs annual club championship, or special monthly club tournaments.
My clubs policy towards Seniors is the reason I began looking for an answer to a question that was not asked. Why is there not a USGA handicap rating from the Forward Tees for Seniors? One interesting point is clubs are now referring to “forward tees” rather than the “Senior tees”. Golf has lady’s tees, and men’s tees.
A staff member of the Texas Golf Association suggested it would be a difficult task for the USGA to rate Senior tees. I disagree because all that would be required is to name the forward tees, already rated, to senior tees. Easy enough?
As it stands now:
- 1. The USGA ratings are factored for gender only.
- 2. It is up to the Tournament Committee, as to Senior play.
- 3. It is the sole discretion to the Club Management.
OK, there is the answer. Now the question.. How can this be changed? The easiest and most simple is to look for Clubs that are Senior friendly, and recognize Seniors as desired group. The other “USGA Senior Ratings” well, this will have to evolve over time, and as most of today's Seniors have departed for that Golf Course in the sky.
See you there, let me know if you need a tee time.
