From the Pro:

Golf Lessons - Picking a Pro

I approached Eben Dennis (my instructor of choice) with a lot of skepticism. After all, I had taken lessons from some of the greats, read many books, purchased several how-to video’s and even went so far as to purchase the "Al Geiberger Sybervision Video".

So what could this guy, Eben Dennis, show someone like me that had already seen it all? But Eben taught me a lot, and it was not only what he taught me that was important to my game, it was what I had to forget. It turns out I had taken many wrong paths to learning about golf that were not good for anybody’s game, and it was a challenge to forget all that stuff that I had been shown by those pretending to be instuctors.

Many Pro's that we pay for lessons do not know how to teach. However, they collect our money while conviencing us that they do. They teach you things like strong grip, weak grip, the V of your hand pointing at your shoulder, shoulder turn, arm straight, feet shoulder width, inside pressure of your knees, butt over your heels, clear your hips, hit down the rail, take away on a level plane, grip with your three fingers.... Seriously, how can you ever hit a ball, and hit it the same each time with all those thoughts cluttering your mind? Your check list will get long, very long.

The experience I am offering you is to do your homework when picking a Pro. Do not do as I have in years past look for the "PGA" patch on the hat or shirt to find a good instructor. The distance between a "good" instructor and a PGA patch is huge. Not to be confusing because some good instructors wear the PGA patch. My point is the patch does not by itself make for a good instructor. It is the person behind the patch that makes the difference. Some great instructors do not wear the patch. The PGA patch recognizes that the person is a "member" of an association. The association is made up of others that make their living in the golf industry, but it does not speak to their teaching ability.

Once you have picked your Pro and learned the basics necessary to play a good game I offer one more step. Go to a "Golf Tec" learning center. What you will find is how your swing matches up to give you the best performance. You have listened to your pro, you have developed a comfort zone, and you do not embarrass yourself on the golf course. However is you are above a 2 handicap you can benefit from the visit to a "Golf Tec Learning Center", and take your game to the next level. Golf Tec is perpared to offer our Senior Golfers Association a special discount to look at your swing, and give you some important feedback (details coming soon). For those looking to learn the proper way to swing a club, and don't have an instructor you will not find a better place than "Golf Tec" from start to finish. Go there, put them to the test, and then make up your own mind. To learn more about Golf Tec Click Here for "Golf Tec"
